This, coming from the girl who is fearless on the jungle gym, on the soccer field, and at the stove. With my sister’s supervision, inspired by and other Food Network favorites, Mia the burgeoning chef helps prepare many of their family meals. As much as Mia knows I adore her, sometimes it’s a challenge to feel connected from a distance, so I've come up with a plan for the coming year: to turn our Skype chats into a Hero-and-Heroine Book Club. We’ll read bits of biographies aloud to one another and listen as the other explains how the stories and lessons they contain might apply in our own lives.
I’ll start by suggesting that she seek out these life stories on her own bookshelf and at the library. She's already as comfortable there as she is on the monkey bars, thanks to weekly trips to the children's section with her grandma, my mom. Whatever she can’t find, I’ll give to her in a couple of weeks when I see her at Christmas. I can’t wait to learn what books she has in mind, and what lessons she'll have in store for me, all before reaching the wise old age of eight.
